Neste Porvoo Refinery
Neste's Porvoo refinery in Kilpilahti is one of the most advanced in Europe, operating 24/7 across a 13-square-kilometre area that includes a power plant, harbour, fire station, petrochemical plant, plastics factory and more. As a high-risk environment handling dangerous substances, its safety systems must be able to reach every worker instantly—regardless of noise or location.
Industrial safety powered by audio technology
A modern audio-based safety and public address system ensures that alarms and instructions can be clearly heard throughout the area. Designed to meet the needs of thousands of workers, the system supports both daily operations and real-time emergency response.
Collaboration to meet demanding requirements
When the site’s population warning, evacuation and security alarm system was renewed, Elektro-Arola and Audico Systems partnered to deliver a comprehensive solution. Audico provided the Audico Avec G2 amplifier centres installed in multiple buildings across the site. Elektro-Arola was responsible for the YLLI interface units and high-powered outdoor sirens mounted on rooftops and masts. They also delivered the VORO software, a unified control platform for both indoor and outdoor systems. All communication runs on Kilpilahti’s dedicated IP security network.
"Cooperation proved its strength in this project. Together, the two Finnish companies were able to provide the total solution the customer wanted, which also required new product development. Alone, we might not have been the strongest in such a demanding project," says Kalle Arola, CEO of Elektro-Arola.
Operational readiness 24/7
The refinery’s fire station operates around the clock, with 45 employees who responded to 460 callouts in the previous year—of which 367 were emergencies. Every Monday at noon, the alarm system is tested by alarm master Teemu Hämäläinen from the central control room to ensure full operational readiness. The alert reaches across the site and can often be heard as far as Porvoo and Sipoo.
Tasks range from automatic fire alarms and arsons to high-pressure water pumping and oil spill control. Firefighters use powerful equipment capable of pumping up to 20,000 litres of water per minute, with additional support from local fire brigades when needed.
Are Oy is responsible for maintaining buildings at the refinery.
"The area is in a state of almost constant change," says Jorma Huttunen, systems expert at Are. Renovations, demolitions and new construction drive the need to continually expand and adapt safety systems.
Targeted alarms with real-time diagnostics
Modern safety audio systems have replaced outdated buzzers and bells. According to Huttunen, a major step forward has been the introduction of diagnostic features. The system can detect malfunctions or interruptions in delivery, allowing for faster maintenance and greater reliability.
"The ability to direct alarms to specific areas via the control screen significantly increases speed and accuracy in emergencies," adds Teemu Hämäläinen.
Not all alerts apply to the entire site, and modern systems allow for tailored announcements that give clear, actionable instructions to those affected.
